Genius Tips for Organizing & Storing Bathing Suits
Full disclosure: bathing suit organization is not something I personally spend much time on.
I'm a one-piece girl. I don't have a sprawling swimwear collection, and that, honestly, is by design. One of the core principles I live and organize by is this: if you don't have enough of something to warrant a category, don't force a system on it. Keep it in the same place every time, and that's your system. No bins, no labels, no over-engineered solution for three items that could all live in one corner of a drawer.
That's the Savvy Sloth way. The simpler the system, the more likely you are to actually remember it and maintain it.
But if you are not like me, if you are someone who truly loves an itsy bitsy teenie weenie bikini and has the swimwear collection to prove it, then this one's for you. As a home organizer, I spend a lot of time researching the best storage solutions and swimsuit organization ideas out there. These are the four approaches I keep coming back to, because they're genuinely clever, low-maintenance, and actually work for different types of swimwear and different closet situations.
1. Over the Door Hanger
This is one of my favorite storage ideas, especially for anyone dealing with a small closet or limited drawer space. When you're tight on storage, always go vertical, and an over the door hanger does exactly that.
What I love most about this approach is how visual it is. You can see your entire personal swimsuit collection at a glance, which makes getting dressed way easier and honestly makes it feel a little like shopping your own closet. It's also fairly low maintenance, which is a non-negotiable for me. Toss it on, pull it off, no digging through a drawer or untangling a twisted tie top.
Great option if you have a small closet, a beach bag-heavy lifestyle, or just want easy access to your suits without much fuss.
2. Clear Pouches
This one genuinely impressed me when I first came across it, and it's become one of my go-to recommendations for swimwear drawer or basket organization.
The idea is simple: store each bathing suit (or set of bikini tops and bottoms) inside its own clear bag or small clear pouch. Then "file" the pouches upright in a drawer organizer or basket so you can flip through them like folders. Want the one with the animal prints? Pull it out. Done with it? Zip it up, file it back.
This is especially great if you have a mix of unique swimsuits in different sizes or different types of swimwear that tend to get tangled together. It keeps everything visible, contained, and protected without taking up much closet space at all. Small garment bags work well here too if you prefer something a bit sturdier.
3. Drawer Dividers
This one is organizing-light, which I mean as a compliment. If you have a designated dresser drawer or swimwear drawer, simply add drawer dividers to create separate sections: one for tops, one for bottoms.
This is the best way to store your suits if you love to mix and match your bikini tops and bottoms, because it keeps everything easy to see and grab without the whole drawer turning into chaos. Drawer organizers do the same job and are usually easy to find and affordable. You don't need anything fancy, just a way to create some structure inside the drawer so your swimsuit collection doesn't turn into a pile.
4. Hang Them
This one is for the ladies who love to "shop" their closet, and you know who you are.
Hanging your bathing suits gives them their own space and creates that same feeling you had when you first brought them home. It's a great alternative to drawer storage if you have the closet space to spare, and pant hangers work perfectly for this. Clip the bottoms, hang the top through, and suddenly your favorite styles are on display like a boutique rack.
I especially love this approach for anyone who's actively trying to cut back on shopping. When your swimwear collection is hanging beautifully and visible, you remember what you already own before you convince yourself you need something new.
The Bottom Line
The best way to organize your bathing suits is the one you'll actually stick with. Whether that's a clear bag system in a dresser drawer, an over the door hanger for easy access, or hanging your favorite pieces in your closet, what matters is that it makes sense to you, keeps your suits in good condition, and puts your brain on autopilot every time you reach for one.
And for off-season storage? Pack your swimwear collection in breathable storage bags (skip the plastic bags, they trap moisture) and keep them in a temperature-controlled place away from direct sunlight and extreme temps until next summer.
